MALANG, HARIAN DISWAY – The chilly evenings in the heart of Malang provide the perfect setting for a warm and comforting beverage. For those in search of an authentic experience, homemade angsle and ronde are delightful choices. At Angsle Ronde Pak Mat Mawar, you can tease your taste buds with two traditional beverages that offer warmth and comfort.

Angsle delights the palate with its sweet and mildly savory essence, achieved by blending rich and creamy coconut milk. Ronde, a local favorite, is renowned for its delightful combination of mild spiciness and the sweetness of ginger infusion. Angsle soup is typically crafted from aromatic spices, prominently featuring ginger and pandan leaves, believed to have health-enhancing properties.

Not only is there a contrast in flavors, but the soup colors are significantly different. Wedang angsle (angsle soup) maintains a deep white hue reminiscent of coconut milk, while ronde boasts a warm light brown color. These contrasting flavor profiles reflect the culinary diversity that thrives in Malang.

Nestled in the heart of Malang, Angsle Ronde Pak Mat Mawar has become the obligatory destination for an authentic wedang angsle experience. This family business has been delighting customers with their wedang angsle for 44 years, starting with the first generation under the guidance of Mr. Rahmat, the founder of Angsle Ronde Pak Mat Mawar. The business is now carried on by Sudarsono, a member of the second generation.

"It's been around since 1979, and now we are in the second generation. My father was the first generation, and we initially sold it using a cart. We've been selling here since 2015," Sudarsono, the present owner, shared his family's journey on Wednesday, 11 October 2023.

The entire family plays a role in sharing the delights of angsle, but Sudarsono's version comes with a unique twist: it features fruit as a delectable topping. He even personally makes square-shaped sago pearls.

A typical bowl of angsle from Angsle Ronde Pak Mat Mawar includes angsle, mung beans, petulo (an East Java traditional cake made of rice flour and tapioca), sticky rice, and small pieces of sliced bread. On the other hand, a bowl of ronde consists of gudir (Javanese jelly), sago pearls, ronde, and peanuts.

"All of our family members are in the same business, selling angsle and ronde, but my version is distinct. Because I add fruit and other homemade toppings to the beverage (angsle). All of the ingredients are homemade, including gudir and sago pearls," he explained.

Throughout a single night, Sudarsono manages to serve over a hundred portions of his mouthwatering bowls. Two standout choices at this cart are angsle nangka (jackfruit angsle) and angsle durian (durian angsle).

"The best sellers are angsle nangka and angsle durian, but I never calculated the exact number of angsle sold, but it's more than 100 portions," Sudarsono remarked.

In today's fast-paced world, a cultural transformation is underway in appreciating traditional cuisine, including beloved classics like angsle.

"In the past, angsle used to be favored by the elderly, but now even young people enjoy it," he noted.

"The original angsle is Rp 8,000, but the added topping is priced higher based on the fruit's availability," he added.

The coconut milk used in this angsle strikes a harmonious balance in terms of taste – it's neither overly mild nor excessively sweet. It serves as the ideal accompaniment for chilly evenings.
